Atonelevelthedefinitionindicatedbythisdevelopmenthaspersisted.Literaturelostitsearliestsenseofreadingabilityandreadingexperience,andbecameanapparentlyobjectivecategoryofprintedworksofacertainquality.Theconcernsofa“literaryeditor”ora“literarysupplement”wouldstillbedefinedinthisway.Butthreecomplicatingtendenciescanthenbedistinguished:first,ashiftfrom“learning”to“taste”or“sensibility”asacriteriondefiningliteraryquality;second,anincreasingspecializationofliteratureto“creative”or“imaginative”works;third,adevelopmentoftheconceptof“tradition”withinnationalterms,resultinginthemoreeffectivedefinitionof“anationalliterature.”ThesourceofeachofthesetendenciescanbediscernedfromtheRenaissance,butitwasintheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturiesthattheycamethroughmostpowerfully,untiltheybecame,inthetwentiethcentury,ineffectreceivedassumptions.
